Drive & Car hire

There is no better time for the ultimate Kimberley road trip than during the Boab Metals Ord Valley Muster! A lot of the main tourist attractions in the Kimberley require 4WD access.

There are a lot of places you can go in 2WD, however to give you the best Kimberley experience we recommend a 4WD for your holiday.

DRIVE INFORMATION

Located at the very top of Western Australia, and only 37km from the Northern Territory border, Kununurra is the gateway to the East Kimberley and in full swing across the Muster dates.

The Victoria Highway is the main road link between Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

  • Perth to Kununurra is 3225km
  • Broome to Kununurra is 1065km
  • Darwin to Kununurra is 848km
  • Katherine to Kununurra is 510km

Driving between Broome to Kununurra on the Victoria Highway you can visit Geike Gorge near Fitzroy Crossing, Wolfe Creek Crater near Halls Creek and amazing Purnululu (Bungle Bungle) – the turn off to visit Purnululu is 273 south of Kununurra. You must have a 4WD to access Purnululu by road.

GIBB RIVER ROAD

The iconic Gibb River Road is 660km and takes you between Derby to Kununurra (or Wyndham). Please note this is a gravel and heavily corrugated road with some water crossings, you definitely require a 4WD vehicle. We recommend allowing minimum 5 days to travel (more if your holiday allows) the Gibb River Road as there are so many great places to stop at. Tunnel Creel, Bell Gorge, Mitchell Falls Home Valley Station, El Questro, Emma Gorge – just to name a few.
